Carla Bruni- The First Lady of France

Here at the Primrose Travelogue we salute Carla Bruni, the First Lady of France. Born 1967, and heiress to the Italian tire manufacturing company CEAT founded in the 1920s by her grandfather Virginio Bruni Tedeschi, she was born in Turin, Italy. The family moved to France in 1973, reportedly to escape the threat of kidnapping by the Red Brigades, a Marxist-Leninist terrorist group active in Italy in the 1970s. Carla grew up in France from five and attended boarding school in Switzerland. She returned to Paris to study art and architecture, but left school at 19 to become a model.

Bruni signed with City Models at 19. Paul Marciano, president and creative director of Guess? Inc., came across her picture among composite cards of aspiring models and chose her to model with Estelle Lefébure in campaigns for Guess? jeans. Bruni subsequently worked for designers and fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, Sonia Rykiel, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and Versace.[3] By the 1990s, Bruni was among the 20 highest-paid fashion models, earning $7.5 million a year. While modeling, Bruni dated Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and Donald Trump.[4] On Friday, 11 April 2008, it was confirmed that a 1993 nude photograph of Bruni had been auctioned for US$91,000 (£46,098) - more than 60 times the expected price

In 1997, Bruni quit the world of fashion to devote herself to music. She sent her lyrics to Julien Clerc in 1999, based on which he composed seven tracks on his 2000 album Si j'étais elle.

In 2002, her debut album Quelqu'un m'a dit, produced by ex-lover Louis Bertignac, was released in Europe with success in Francophone countries.[6] Three songs from the album appear in Hans Canosa's 2005 American film Conversations with Other Women. The song "Le plus beau du quartier" was used in H&M's Christmas 2006 commercial.

In 2005, she was a guest in Louis Bertignac's return album on the song Les frôleuses which they sang as a duet.

In 2006, Bruni recorded "Those Little Things" an English-language translation of the Serge Gainsbourg song "Ces Petits Riens", for the tribute album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. She participated in the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in a parade paying tribute to the Italian flag.

Her second album, No Promises containing poems by Yeats, Emily Dickinson, Auden, Dorothy Parker, Walter de la Mare, and Christina Rosetti, set to music, was released in January 2007.

Her albums are released by the French independent record label Naïve, which releases artists such as Vinicius Cantuaria and Aline de Lima.

Her music career still did not cease after becoming the First Lady. She will release her third album "Comme si de rien n'était" (As if nothing happened) on July 21, 2008. The songs are self-penned except for one rendition of Bob Dylan's You belong to me and another song with poem of Michel Houellebecq set to music.

It has been claimed that Carla Bruni was involved with Louis Bertignac, Mick Jagger (Jagger's wife acknowledged his affair with Bruni was a reason for their separation), Eric Clapton, Donald Trump, Léos Carax, Charles Berling, Arno Klarsfeld, Vincent Perez[10] and former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius.

While living with Jean-Paul Enthoven, Bruni fell in love and started an affair with his son, philosophy professor Raphaël Enthoven (track 2, Raphäel, of Carla's album Quelqu'un m'a dit is named after him), who was at the time married to novelist Justine Lévy, daughter of philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy.[13]

The affair and the ending of her marriage were inspiration for Justine Lévy's book Rien de grave (Nothing Serious), published in 2004. In it, Lévy paints a vitriolic portrait of "Paula", the female who steals the protagonist's husband, as "a praying mantis" with "a Terminator smile".[14]

Bruni and Raphaël Enthoven had a son, Aurélien, in 2001.

At the end of 2007, Bruni was reported to be in a relationship with French president Nicolas Sarkozy [16] after photographers took pictures of them visiting Disneyland Resort Paris, as well as during a vacation in Luxor, Egypt and Petra, Jordan during the Christmas holidays.[17] During a press conference at the Elysée Palace on January 8, 2008, President Sarkozy confirmed their relationship and hinted at a wedding.[18]
They married on 2 February 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris. The marriage is Bruni's first and Sarkozy's third.

How to Make Simple Syrup

Simple syrup, or sugar syrup, is very easy to make and is used in many cocktails to add volume and sweetness. With this recipe you can make as small or as large a batch as you wish and store it in the refrigerator in a well sealed bottle indefinitely.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 part sugar
  • 1 part water

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring the water to a boil.
  2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat.
  4. Allow to cool completely and bottle.

Flavor-infused simple syrups:

Cardamom Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup whole cardamom
  • 2 cups sugar

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring water and cardamom to a boil.
  2. Stir in sugar until fully dissolved.
  3. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  4. Keep in the refrigerator for 3 days, then remove the cardamom.

Eucalyptus Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 16 ounces water
  • 16 ounces sugar
  • 1/3 cup fresh eucalyptus

PREPARATION:

  1. Mix sugar with water and bring to a boil.
  2. Simmer for 1 minute, add leaves and liquidize.
  3. Put in a bowl and cover in cling film for 15 minutes, then refrigerate.
Vanilla Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 vanilla beans

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring the sugar and water to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise into halves and place in a heatproof jar or bottle.
  3. Pour the hot syrup over the vanilla beans and let stand for 8 to 10 hours.
  4. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Vanilla-Ginger Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:
  • 8 ounces sugar
  • 8 ounces water
  • 1/4 cup fresh ginger, chopped
  • 2 vanilla beans, split and scraped

PREPARATION:

  1. Combine all ingredients into a sauce pan and bring to a boil for one minute.
  2. Remove from the heat and let steep for 20 minutes.
  3. Strain out vanilla bean pods and ginger and cool syrups.

pissed at the sci fi channel

Im tuning in to the next episode of Doctor Who and then the episode stalls on a frame for 5 minutes. There is a commercial and after the commercial the screen is blank for the rest of the time the show is supposed to air. While its blank I try to get on the channel's forum but that doesn't work either. Really pissed off at the sci fi channel right now.

My hassle with getting a Sidecar Cocktail

This classic cocktail invented in the jazz age needs to be enjoyed more than it is. A Sidecar is made from three simple ingredients; Brandy, Cointreau and Lemon juice. In my opinion, the Sidecar has not just been forgotten, it has become endangered because of the National Franchise Restaurant Conspiracy Against Traditional Cocktails (N.F.R.C.A.T.C.). Cocktails over indulgent in presentation and non-alcoholic flavor are what these company's million dollar expended polls tell them we want. If traditional mixology and God forbid alcohol content have to be sacrificed then so be it. Your going to get the cocktail on the menu because the company has ordered it so. As an experiment I requested the Sidecar at Applebees, Bennigan’s, Chili's, T.G.I. Friday's, Ruby Tuesday and Max and Erma's. None of the servers knew what I was talking about and all were unwilling to offer me this simple drink. A few of the servers consulted the bartender who was obviously dumb-founded. And to further add insult to injury the bar featured the necessary ingredients but the bartender was too ignorant to put the three ingredients together! Each visit to these restaurants was a disappointment. Protest these national restaurant's ignorance of traditional cocktails by visiting your local independently owned restaurant instead. I finally found a server (unsure but willing) to offer me a Sidecar at an independently owned restaurant. And the drink was worth the hassle I had to endure.

I prefer the "English School" mix: two parts Brandy, one part Cointreau, one part Lemon Juice (even less lemon juice to reduce too much sour taste), glass rimmed with sugar.

Jo Weldon in Las Vegas

This is me performing at the Exotic World/Burlesque Hall of Fame Striptease Reunion the night before the pageant. I'm doing an homage to Candy Barr. It's not intended to look like her, but the moves, costume, and hairdo all relate to things I've seen in her photos, interviews, and film clips. At the beginning I'm walking around the edge of the stage flirting with the "legends," burlesque performers who worked in the 1940s-1970s. And, I forgot to put my boots on, darn it! I got distracted by my falling hair. But at least I remembered to take my top off!

Added: March 15, 2008 and deleted from youtube a few hours later. Apparently breasts are offensive enough to censor from public viewing. Although over three billion people have them. Youtube permits live birthing videos in which vaginas are visible. So public viewing of human anatomy must not be that bad in YouTube's eyes.  Just where should the line be drawn? The video is available in Germany however.

How to Tassle Twirl - MyVideo

Makes me worry that all burlesque videos on YouTube might get deleted and there would be no outlet for promoting the burlesque scene.
