How to Make Simple Syrup

Simple syrup, or sugar syrup, is very easy to make and is used in many cocktails to add volume and sweetness. With this recipe you can make as small or as large a batch as you wish and store it in the refrigerator in a well sealed bottle indefinitely.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 part sugar
  • 1 part water

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring the water to a boil.
  2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat.
  4. Allow to cool completely and bottle.


Flavor-infused simple syrups:

Cardamom Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup whole cardamom
  • 2 cups sugar

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring water and cardamom to a boil.
  2. Stir in sugar until fully dissolved.
  3. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  4. Keep in the refrigerator for 3 days, then remove the cardamom.

Eucalyptus Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 16 ounces water
  • 16 ounces sugar
  • 1/3 cup fresh eucalyptus

PREPARATION:

  1. Mix sugar with water and bring to a boil.
  2. Simmer for 1 minute, add leaves and liquidize.
  3. Put in a bowl and cover in cling film for 15 minutes, then refrigerate.
Vanilla Syrup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 vanilla beans

PREPARATION:

  1. Bring the sugar and water to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise into halves and place in a heatproof jar or bottle.
  3. Pour the hot syrup over the vanilla beans and let stand for 8 to 10 hours.
  4. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Vanilla-Ginger Simple Syrup

INGREDIENTS:
  • 8 ounces sugar
  • 8 ounces water
  • 1/4 cup fresh ginger, chopped
  • 2 vanilla beans, split and scraped

PREPARATION:

  1. Combine all ingredients into a sauce pan and bring to a boil for one minute.
  2. Remove from the heat and let steep for 20 minutes.
  3. Strain out vanilla bean pods and ginger and cool syrups.
